Ripped from the headlines…a mathematician at the University of Central Missouri recently proved that the largest to date number, 257,885,161-1, is a prime number. If you recall, prime numbers are ones that are only divisible by 1 and themselves (i.e 2, 3, 17, 57, etc).

So, who cares? Well, anyone who banks, shops or generally gives a fig about their internet privacy. You see, prime numbers have become the key to encryption of data and are thus the underpinnings of e-commerce. So the next time you buy that scarf, game or Olivia Newton-John boxed cd set from an online purveyor, tip your cap in gratitude towards math, glorious math.

  1. Hey There. I found your weblog the usage of msn. This is a very neatly written article. I will be sure to bookmark it and return to learn more of your helpful info. Thank you for the post. I will definitely return.

  2. The reason math and scicene are so essential to America is because our nation has become so developed that math and scicene is a vital resource to our country. In my local community a near by high school was given the title of having the greatest dropout rate in PISD. All these dropouts from this school and many other schools are going to lack the education needed in order to be sucessful in the real world. United States main priority is to be #1 at everything. However, the only form of education these dropouts have is elemetary/middle school education at most. Due to this the U.S is falling behind in math and scicene. In order to regain the global superiority that America would want would be for everyone to have at least a highschool education in math and scicene. This would increase the percentage of the educated in math and scicene drastically.
