Joe joined Zeno’s board as a Board Fellow in June 2017. Through this program, business students at the University of Washington have the opportunity to join the board of a local non-profit as a non-voting member to learn about the structure of non-profit boards and gain experience for future community engagement. In addition to being a student, Joe works at McKinstry as a consultant and salesman, where he puts his problem-solving skills to work solving facility issues. Before joining McKinstry, he served in the U.S. Navy for 5 years after graduating from college.
Joe is excited about Zeno’s commitment to emphasizing the importance of math. He developed a first-hand appreciation for the value of teaching math in engaging ways when acting as a substitute teacher for younger students, at the request of his own teacher, Mrs. Clark. Through this experience, he realized that “math ‘clicks’ in different ways for different people and that math teachers need to be fluent in each of those ways in order to reach students.”
When not at working, at school, or hanging out with his son, you’re likely to run into him on one of Washington’s trails!
